WELL-BEING INThe Prep School

Wellbeing at Sherfield School: Junior and Senior Prep Phases

Our Commitment to Wellbeing

Wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do at Sherfield School. When children feel safe, supported and valued, they are free to learn bravely, express themselves confidently and develop strong, healthy relationships.

Across Junior and Senior Prep, every child is cared for by a network of adults who know them well: class teachers, form tutors, our Head of Prep team, Inclusion specialists, School Nurses and our dedicated School Counsellor. This layered pastoral system ensures no child is ever overlooked and every child has someone to turn to .

Our ethos of Kindness, Courage and Respect creates a positive, compassionate environment, strengthened by consistent behaviour expectations and a proactive anti-bullying approach .

Wellbeing is also nurtured through:

  • Outdoor learning in our beautiful woodland
  • A healthy, balanced approach to food and physical activity
  • Opportunities for leadership and responsibility
  • Emotional literacy and PSHE programmes led by our expert staff

At Sherfield, pupils don’t just grow academically, they grow as confident, empathetic and resilient young people ready to flourish.

Junior Prep

Nurturing Young Minds
In Junior Prep, we focus on creating a warm and supportive atmosphere where young pupils feel safe and valued. We understand that the early years of education are foundational, and we aim to instil a love for learning while promoting holistic development.
Wellbeing Initiatives
  • Emotional Literacy: We introduce children to the concepts of emotions and feelings through engaging activities and discussions, helping them to recognise, understand, and manage their emotions effectively.
  • Mindfulness and Relaxation: Regular mindfulness sessions are integrated into the curriculum, teaching children techniques to relax and focus their minds, enhancing their ability to handle stress.
  • Positive Relationships: Through group activities and collaborative projects, we encourage pupils to build positive relationships with their peers, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
  • Physical Activity: A variety of sports and physical activities are offered, ensuring that pupils remain active and understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

Parental Involvement
Collaboration with parents is key to the wellbeing of our pupils. We regularly communicate with them and hold workshops to equip them with strategies to support their children's emotional and physical health at home.

Senior Prep

Supporting Growing Independence

As pupils transition to the Senior Prep phase, we provide them with the tools and support needed to navigate the increasing demands of their academic and personal lives. Our well-being programmes promote resilience, self-awareness, and a balanced approach to life.

“You've helped my daughter to believe in herself when her confidence was at rock bottom. It is a daily relief that she is somewhere where she feels safe, interested and valued. Sherfield is education as it should be.”Year 5 Parent
Wellbeing Initiatives
  • Personal Development: Through our Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education, pupils engage in topics such as self-esteem, decision-making, and healthy relationships, preparing them for the challenges ahead.
  • Counselling Services: Professional counselling services are available for pupils who need additional support, ensuring they have a safe space to discuss any concerns or issues they may face.
  • Peer Support Programmes: Senior Prep pupils are encouraged to take on leadership roles, such as becoming peer mentors and fostering a culture of support and empathy within the school community.
  • Healthy Living: Comprehensive physical education and nutrition programmes help pupils understand and maintain a healthy lifestyle, promoting physical and mental well-being.

“Leaders, supported by governors, effectively promote the school’s caring ethos. This is seen through the PSHE curriculum and assemblies, which celebrate diversity and promote respect for others. Leaders have recently introduced professional counselling facilities for pupils. These are well used, allowing pupils to access mental health support quickly.”ISI Inspection 2024
Holistic Approach
Our holistic approach to education in the Senior Prep phase ensures that pupils develop academically, emotionally, and socially. We strive to create a balanced environment where pupils can thrive and reach their full potential.
